Volvo all-keys-lost — CEM bench programming, two keys cut and programmed
A vehicle owner arrived without any working keys for their Volvo. Resolved same-day via Central Electronic Module (CEM) bench programming, with two new keys cut and programmed before close of business. NASTF VSP credentialed for the security gateway access required.
What the vehicle was doing.
Vehicle owner brought a Volvo to our San Antonio shop with no working keys. Previous keys lost, no spares available. Vehicle could not be entered without breaking glass; could not be started.
What we found, and how.
Volvo all-keys-lost recovery on this platform requires the Central Electronic Module (CEM) to be removed and bench-programmed before new keys can be cut and registered to the vehicle's immobilizer. This is not a procedure that can be completed through the OBD port — the CEM must come off the vehicle for the boot-mode read that exposes the security data needed to generate new keys.
What the work required.
Volvo VIDA with current OEM subscription for the on-vehicle programming steps. Bench programmer with Volvo CEM adapter for the boot-mode read. Key-cutting equipment for the physical key blanks. NASTF VSP credentials for the security gateway operations involved.
Step by step.
- 01Vehicle towed to shop; access gained through manufacturer-approved entry procedure.
- 02CEM removed from vehicle.
- 03CEM connected to bench programmer; boot-mode read performed to extract security data required for new key generation.
- 04Two new physical key blanks cut to match the vehicle's key code.
- 05CEM modified at the bench to accept the new keys; reinstalled in vehicle.
- 06New keys programmed to the vehicle via VIDA on-vehicle procedure.
- 07Both keys verified functional — unlock, lock, start, immobilizer authorization.
What the customer left with.
Customer drove the vehicle out of our shop the same day with two functional keys. The dealer alternative would have required towing to the dealership, multiple-day wait for an appointment slot, and significantly higher cost. NASTF VSP credentialing is what makes this work legal for an independent shop — most San Antonio independents cannot perform Volvo AKLP because they do not hold the credential.
