Q01 / TRADE
What's your dispatch service area, and is there a trip charge?
San Antonio metro and surrounding cities. 20-mile travel radius included of 4715 N Stahl Park (Stone Oak, Helotes, Alamo Heights, Converse, Leon Valley, Selma, Live Oak, Universal City, Cibolo, Schertz). Beyond 20 miles, a flat $2.50 per-mile trip charge applies (Boerne, New Braunfels, Seguin, Floresville, Pleasanton, San Marcos). Outside that radius, ask about remote J2534 programming or mail-in bench service — both nationwide.
Q02 / TRADE
What's the typical dispatch lead time and on-site duration?
Same-day available for most platforms during business hours; next-business-day for evening calls. On-site duration depends on scope: a single ECM/PCM flash plus variant coding typically 45 min–2 hours; a full module replacement with security access, immobilizer adaptation, and SCN/component-protection unlock can run 2–4 hours. Tell us the OEM, module, and fault codes when you call — we'll quote a realistic window before we roll.
Q03 / TRADE
What do you need from the shop before dispatch?
VIN, year/make/model, fault codes pulled with timestamps, description of work attempted (parts replaced, modules swapped, prior programming attempts), parts on hand, and the specific service being requested. If a module has been replaced, confirm it's verified-new or a known-good used part with VIN history. Five minutes documenting upfront saves an hour of diagnostic backtracking in the bay.
Q04 / TRADE
How does mail-in bench service work?
Ship the module to our shop with a printed work order: VIN, vehicle year/make/model, requested procedure (e.g. “BMW MSV80 DME ISN retrieval + DME-to-CAS alignment”), shop contact, and return shipping address. Most jobs ship back within 24–72 hours bench time, less than one week round-trip. We handle DME ISN, 722.9 TCM cloning, EEPROM repair, FRM data recovery, and most bench-level platforms across the US and into Canada.
Q05 / TRADE
What do I need on my side for remote J2534 programming?
A J2534-compliant pass-thru device (Mongoose, DrewTech CarDAQ-Plus, Bosch MTC, GM MDI, etc.), a Windows laptop in the bay, and a stable internet connection (wired preferred, 25 Mbps+). Battery maintainer on the vehicle. If you have a compatible Autel MaxiSys with Remote Expert enabled, that's the fastest path — no laptop required on your end. We bring all OE software, subscriptions, and security credentials.
Q06 / TRADE
Are you NASTF VSP credentialed, and what does AIR access cover?
Yes. Spot-On's lead technician holds active NASTF Vehicle Security Professional registration, with NASTF AIR access for secure data release on all participating OEMs. AIR transactions cover lawful access to immobilizer programming, key generation, security gateway unlocks, and Mercedes-Benz TRP coordination. Every AIR transaction is logged and audited per NASTF protocol — critical for any modern post-2008 platform.
Q07 / TRADE
Do you source modules, or do we supply them?
We can supply modules if you'd prefer that route — just inform us in advance so we can source and verify the correct part. We also don't discourage shops from sourcing modules themselves. For trade partners going that path, we recommend OEM-new from the dealership or verified-used from reputable salvage with VIN history and pre-purchase scan. We'll tell you per-platform which path makes sense — some platforms (Mercedes 722.x, BMW DME, VAG component-protected modules) tolerate used modules with the right cloning/virginizing; others require new. Bring the part numbers; we'll vet them.
Q08 / TRADE
What's your warranty on programming work?
No warranty on programming work. Programming is verified at the moment of completion — if the procedure succeeds and the module functions, the work is done. If something goes wrong mid-procedure we troubleshoot on-site and either resolve it or document the issue for the next step. Hardware defects fall under the module manufacturer's warranty. Installation or post-programming damage (improper handling, battery disconnect during operation, etc.) falls under the responsible party.
Q09 / TRADE
What are your payment terms for trade accounts?
Net-due at completion for new partners. Established recurring shops can request Net-15 or Net-30 terms after the first few invoices establish payment history — minimum invoice size $1,000 to qualify for extended terms. We accept all major cards, ACH, and check. No deposits required on bench-level work. Volume discounts are handled case-by-case based on your servicing history and payment history with us.
Q10 / TRADE
How do you compare to dealer programming on cost and turnaround?
Three differences. (1) Cost: wholesale/trade pricing, generally lower than dealer-direct programming when you factor in dealer markup and shop labor for transport. (2) Turnaround: same-day common; dealers commonly run 3–10 business days on programming bookings. (3) Capability: we run dealer-level OEM software plus engineering-tier tools the dealer doesn't have access to — SFD unlock for 2020+ VAG, component-protection workarounds, used-DME ISN alignment, etc.
Q11 / TRADE
How do we become a recurring partner shop?
Call (210) 439-7905 and ask about partnership. We talk through your volume, the kinds of work you tend to send out, and how to structure the relationship. Recurring partners get dispatch priority, Net-15 or Net-30 terms, and direct-line access to the lead technician instead of the general queue. We don't compete for your retail customers — the trade track is wholesale only.
Q12 / TRADE
Do you work differently with body shops vs. mechanical shops vs. transmission shops?
Yes — the scope is different. Body / collision shops: primarily ADAS pre/post-scan and recalibration after collision repair, plus module replacement when crash damage destroyed a control unit. Mechanical shops: module programming after part replacement, key & immobilizer service, electrical diagnostics, ECU software corrections. Transmission shops: TCM cloning and programming after rebuild, 722.9 unlocks, ZF 8HP/9HP adaptive learning, GM TCM scripts. We adjust process to each.
Q13 / TRADE
Do you handle Cummins, Duramax, and Powerstroke programming?
Yes — full diesel and heavy-duty diagnostics is a strategic specialty. Our lead technician holds ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck and ASE L2 Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist. We program Cummins via INSITE/Power Spec/Calterm with current OEM subscriptions, Duramax via GDS2/TIS2000, and Powerstroke via FDRS. Includes DEF/SCR programming, EGR adaptations, and post-rebuild calibrations.
Q14 / TRADE
What do you need on-site for ADAS calibration?
A level shop floor (within OEM spec, typically <0.5% slope), controlled lighting (no direct sun on targets), enough clear floorspace forward of the vehicle for target placement (varies by OEM — BMW + Mercedes need 3.5–6 meters, Honda/Toyota less), verified ride height, completed alignment, and a confirmed clear-of-faults pre-scan. We bring the OEM target boards, level platform, and software. If alignment or ride height is off, we calibrate to wrong, so confirm first.
Q15 / TRADE
What happens if programming fails or the module is defective?
First-pass diagnostic: power and ground verification, gateway communication test, attempt re-flash with alternate file version, attempt bench programming if OBD path is blocked. If the module is electrically functional but the OEM file is corrupt or wrong, we document and reach out to the OEM technical support channel. If the module is hardware-defective, that's a parts warranty claim through your supplier. Additional service charges may apply depending on scope — communicated case by case. We document everything for the claim.
Q16 / TRADE
Is there a pre-flight checklist before you arrive?
Yes. Battery at 12.6V+ with a maintainer connected (programming load can pull voltage dangerously low). Ignition state per the procedure (we'll specify). Fault codes documented and saved. All key fobs in the vehicle, especially for any immobilizer work. Parts on hand and pre-checked. HVAC and accessories off. If the procedure requires a specific gateway unlock or SFD code, have any dealer paperwork or NASTF AIR confirmation accessible.
Q17 / TRADE
What documentation do we get after programming?
Documentation is available upon request and must be requested in advance — before service begins. Letting us know up front allows us to capture the specific data your claim or warranty may require during the procedure itself (some logs and scan data can't be regenerated retroactively). Documentation available on request includes: pre- and post-programming scan reports, the OEM software's programming log (where exported by the tool), before/after fault code lists, calibration certificates for ADAS work, and an itemized work order. Especially important for any work that needs to be claimed on insurance or warranty later. Reports are emailed within one business day of completion.
Q18 / TRADE
How does mail-in pricing compare to local dispatch?
Mail-in is generally cheaper than local dispatch — no trip charge, more efficient bench time. Trade-off: longer turnaround (24–72 hours bench time plus shipping each way vs. same-day in your bay) and the module must come out and go back in twice. Use mail-in for bench-only work (DME ISN, TCM cloning, EEPROM repair) or when your shop is outside dispatch radius. Local dispatch wins when the module stays in the vehicle.
Q19 / TRADE
How do you handle Mercedes-Benz TRP requests?
Submit through our Mercedes-Benz TRP Request form. Provide your name, business, dealership point of contact, and the full part number list from the dealer parts counter. We submit the dealership purchase under our NASTF VSP credentials, coordinate acquisition, verify part numbers against the dealer invoice at checkout, and handle chain-of-custody. Typical timeline depends on dealer parts availability — we move on our end within one business day of submission.
Q20 / TRADE
What makes Spot-On different from other mobile programmers in the area?
Credential stack and platform reach. Active NASTF VSP, ASE Master Automobile + ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck + L1–L4 Advanced Specialist (including ADAS), I-CAR ADAS training, plus 11 Ford FACT credentials. We service Tesla (Toolbox 3 + Service Mode+), Land Rover/Jaguar (Pathfinder, TOPIx), Porsche (PIWIS), and full diesel/heavy-duty — a combination most San Antonio mobile programmers don't carry.
Q21 / TRADE
Should I sublet Tesla, JLR, or Porsche work to you instead of sending it to the dealer?
Yes — that's exactly what we're built for. Tesla service requires Toolbox 3 with Service Mode+, which independent shops generally don't have. Land Rover/Jaguar needs JLR Pathfinder with current subscription. Porsche needs PIWIS. Sublet to us at trade pricing, keep the customer relationship in your shop, and avoid the dealer wait list. For most independents, this is meaningfully more profitable than the alternative.
Q22 / TRADE
Replaced ECM/PCM and now it won't start — what's your diagnostic approach?
Post-swap no-starts come in too many flavors to walk through every variation in an FAQ — virgin module verification, security access state, immobilizer pairing, CAN bus communication, and OEM file selection all branch differently per platform and per prior history. Call (210) 439-7905 with the year, make, model, and what's been attempted so far. We resolve most of these in a single dispatch or bench session; some we can talk through remotely. The right path comes out of the conversation.
