Airbag light on
after an accident?

After any collision — even a minor one — a lit SRS/airbag light usually means the airbag control module has stored a permanent crash (hard) code and locked itself, or a deployed component needs replacement and programming. It will not clear with a normal scan-tool erase. Spot-On diagnoses the fault, resets or replaces the SRS module, and clears crash data at our San Antonio shop.

Common causes.

  • Crash data locked in the moduleAfter a deployment the SRS module writes permanent hard codes. Most cannot be cleared with a normal erase — the module is locked until it is reset or replaced.
  • Deployed or damaged componentsBlown airbags, seat-belt pretensioners, or impact/crash sensors have to be replaced before the warning will clear.
  • Disconnected or damaged wiringConnectors under the seats or in the harness are commonly pulled or pinched during collision repair, setting circuit faults.
  • Replacement module not codedA new or used SRS module has to be programmed and coded to your exact VIN before it will function.

Diagnosed properly, fixed at the root.

The SRS system controls live pyrotechnic devices — clearing the light without fixing the cause can leave airbags that won’t fire in a crash, or that fire unexpectedly. This is why a proper crash-data reset and module coding require OEM tooling and cannot be done with a generic code eraser. It is a safety system, not a nuisance light.

  1. Read the hard codes. We pull the stored SRS codes and identify whether the module is reset-eligible or must be replaced.
  2. Reset or replace the module. Reset crash data where the module allows it, or install and VIN-program a replacement.
  3. Repair deployed components & wiring. Confirm airbags, pretensioners, sensors, and connectors are correct and intact.
  4. Verify system readiness. Clear codes, confirm no active faults, and check the airbag lamp completes its self-test.

Questions we get about this.

Can you just turn off the airbag light?
Not safely. If there is a stored crash code or a deployed component, clearing the light without fixing the cause disables your crash protection. We diagnose and repair the actual fault first, then verify the system is live.
Do I need a new airbag module, or can it be reset?
It depends on the code. Some modules allow a crash-data reset; modules with deployment codes usually must be replaced and programmed to your VIN. We tell you which after diagnosis — no guessing.
My body shop finished the repair but the light is still on — can you help?
Yes. This is common. We handle post-collision SRS coding and any related ADAS recalibration. Body shops are trade partners, so we can also come to their bay to finish the electronics.
